One-to-One Tuition – How I approach it...

I provide bespoke programmes of one to one tuition in English Language and English Literature, catering for a wide range of tuition needs. Tuition is face-to-face.

Evening, daytime or weekend sessions are available, with regular allocated weekly slots during term-time. Additional sessions are available in the school holidays on a first-come first-served basis. All sessions are one hour long, and double sessions can be booked where available. I normally offer sessions Monday to Saturday but closer to the exam period I do also offer some additional Sunday sessions. Regular slots in my term-time timetable usually fill up quickly and I operate a waiting list system. Please call, What's App or email for current availability.

Individualised Learning

The great thing about 1 to 1 tuition is being able to work with each student in an individualised way. I can build the rapport that enables students to feel comfortable to say when they don’t understand and ask any questions they have. Tutoring sessions are informal and relaxed, and provide a very different learning environment to a school classroom.

My approach is always based on careful assessment of the student’s current level of achievement and diagnosis of any barriers or difficulties impeding progress. I also believe that confidence is key to academic success and helping students to see their own potential can enable dramatic improvements in performance. As a tutor it’s my role to provide clear explanations, break down concepts in a simple and straightforward way and then build upon the secure foundations. It’s also my job to help students to be able to genuinely enjoy the subject and encourage the importance and enjoyment of reading.

Increases Learning Speed

The 1:1 format enables me to cover a lot of ground on the curriculum relatively rapidly, but I also ensure students get to tackle enough practice questions and examination papers to consolidate their knowledge, drawing on a wide range of text books and online resources. I also make sure I provide regular weekly homework to consolidate the learning in the lesson and to show progress. For GCSE English Language and Literature students preparing for exams, providing coaching in exam technique can make all the difference in getting the grade they require.

I support and encourage students to take ownership of their own learning, providing advice on study techniques and helping them to identify the areas where they most need help. I also communicate effectively with parents providing updates and being available to discuss progress in person, by phone or through email.

"My son went from a Grade 3 to a Grade 6 in 2 ½ months. This result has improved my son’s confidence in his own ability and he feels more positive about his future and in his future apprenticeship application. I am extremely satisfied with the service provided by Stephen and would highly recommend the service to other parents and students."
